Eastern Australian gas demand growth of more than 2.5% per year is expected over the next two decades, with Queensland demand expected to grow at 5.3% per year over the same period. In the absence of gas supply from the rapidly maturing coal seam gas industry, a gas supply shortfall would have been likely around 2010—12 as Cooper Basin production starts to decline more rapidly.
It is expected that the CSG industry will develop at a rate that will ensure eastern Australian gas requirements are met.
Based on current estimates CSG supply is expected to account for approximately 50% of eastern Australian gas demand by 2020. No other gas market in the world currently has this level of CSG penetration.
